Moti Bagh Palace set for restoration.

Old Moti Bagh Palace, built as one of the largest residences in the world and now the headquarters of National Institute of Sports (NIS) at Patiala, is finally going to see the much-needed repairs and restoration. The Ministry of Sports has sanctioned Rs 7 crore for the purpose.

The work is being done by Punjab Heritage and Tourism Development Board. For the right expertise required for the repair of this complex, the board is going to invite expressions of interest from leading architectural consultants.

The palace, whose old quarters were built in the 1840s by the then maharaja of Patiala, was later expanded almost a century ago in the 1920s during the reign of Bhupinder Singh. The NIS is situated in the east wing. The palace, with a beautiful garden with terraces and water channels, has not seen any major repairs or restoration work in decades. Deterioration of the structure is now visible, with leaking roofs, cracks at various places, and the plaster coming off in patches.
