Harimandir Sahib water tank to be demolished

To provide an unhindered view to the Golden Temple, an overhead water tank that has been shadowing the beauty of the historic bungas (towers) in the temple complex will be demolished and a new tank based on modern water supply technology constructed at a relatively low height.

Deputy Commissioner K S Pannu said the decision was taken following numerous requests and consultations with experts and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee. He said devotees watching the live telecast of Gurbani from Sri Harmandar Sahib were irked by the sight of water tank constructed in the Galiara in 1988.

“The tank gives a shabby look to the surroundings of the shrine. Taking into consideration the feelings of the devotees, the administration brought the matter to the notice of the government, after which the decision was taken to demolish the tank,” said Pannu, adding that the work on building a revamped entry to the shrine was already on.
