SGPC hands over Kar seva of Todar Mal Haveli to expelled Baba

Historic Todar Mal Haveli in pitiful state

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee(SGPC) today has allotted the kar sewa of Jahaz Haveli of Diwan Todar Mal, Fatehgarh Sahib to Baba Amrik Singh.Baba Amrik Singh has a vast experience of undertaking kar sewa in India and Pakistan, including the Golden Temple and Nankana Sahib, before he was expelled by the Dera Kar Sewa of Jagtar Singh, Tarn Taran, following charges of embezzlement a couple of years ago.

On a complaint of Baba Mohinder Singh, treasurer of the dera, a case under Sections 420 and 406, IPC, had been registered by the Tarn Taran police in 2006 against Baba Amrik Singh and two of his relatives. Refuting the charges of embezzlement of Rs 2 crore leveled by Baba Jagtar Singh, Baba Amrik Singh had maintained that the fact was that he had dedicated his life to kar sewa and he was defamed under a deep-rooted conspiracy by his detractors.

The decision of allotting kar sewa of Jahaz Haveli of Diwan Todar Mal to Baba Amrik Singh was informed to media persons today during a meeting of a committee constituted by SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar. SGPC members Karnail Singh Panjoli, Didar Singh Bhatti, XEN Manpreet Singh and SGPC secretary Dalmegh Singh are members of the committee.Panjoli confirmed the decision of allotting work to Baba Amrik Singh.

It may be mentioned here that earlier restoration work of dilapidating historical Jahaz Haveli of Diwan Todar Mal was allotted to Mohinder Kaur an NRI from UK, who had offered kar sewa for Jahaz Haveli but during recent held meeting of SGPC it was decided to now hand over work to Baba Amrik Singh as SGPC was not reportedly satisfied with the work of the NRI.

Diwan Todar Mal had relinquished his entire wealth to get a small piece of land to perform last rites of Sahibzadas of Guru Gobind Singh and his mother Mata Gujri. Nawab Wazir Khan (Nawab of Sirhind) had ordered to brick alive both Sahibzadas. The SGPC had stated that efforts were being made to restore the haveli to its original shape and glory. Major portions of the building collapsed over the years due to lack of care.

I visited the site in Feb 2012 and there was no progress. No one with right mind can believe that Sikhs could be that 'Akitghan' (Sikh word for those who forget the good deed of others) to let the havali to fall in this condition whilst spending millions in the city. I spoke to a local who told me that it is all play nothing happening on site. A lot of reclaimed bricks on site not clear if some one is preparing these for restoration or for sale.

Waheguru help us. If there is any progress please put on.
