Sikh history to be rewritten says SGPC

Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Avtar Singh Makkar Monday said here that SGPC will review and re-write all the Sikh history written by Indian and English scholars.

Addressing a news conference after the Barsi Smagam of Nihang chief Baba Santa Singh he said that some writers and scholars have been spreading negative publicity and raising doubts on Sikh history. He said that to rest these types of controversies SGPC will setup a Sikh History department at Sikh University at Fatehgarh Sahib.

He was replying to question regarding two different theories have been given by Some Scholars regarding the wining spree of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur- the SGPC has been tri-century of Sirhind Fateh and establishment of first Sikh Empire.

Asked about the Hindi translation book of Sikh history and “Gurbilas Patsahi-6, he said that SGPC has already withdrawn both the books.

He said that hindi translation of “A History of the Sikhs" was originally written by Joseph Davey Cunningham and published in London in 1849. He however admitted the lapse of SGPC for not giving any footnotes on it.

The SGPC has already ordered the withdrawal the book published by the DPC in 1999-2000, which allegedly carries blasphemous information. The SGPC had also withdrawn the book “Gurbilas Patsahi-6 “, edited by Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti (ex Jathedar of Akal Takht) following strong reactions by the Sikh scholars to some objectionable contents.

Asked about siropa given by SGPC members to Captain Amarinder Singh during his visit in the Golden Temple on Sunday he said that it was the handiwork of Harminder Singh Gill –Ex gen secy of AISSF now Secretary Congress.

He said that SGPC member Sukhwinder Singh Sidhu was a close associate of Gill and Sidhu acted on the behest of Gill.

Asked about any action against the employees of SGPC who have helped Sidhu, Makkar said that he has sought report in this regard from the secretary SGPC.

Captain Singh, Sunday, after paying obeisance was given Siropa (robe of honor) in the information centre of Golden Temple by SGPC members Jagjit Singh Bhullar and Sukhwinder Sing Sidhu in the presence of Assistant Information officer of Golden Temple Jaswinder Singh Jassi.

SikhNugget: It should be noted that Gurbilas Patshai 6 is the only book which gives details on the creation of the Akal Takht and also pertinent information on Guru Granth Sahib
