State to remember unsung hero of Sikh history

State to remember unsung hero of Sikh history

Hindustan Times, Chandigarh, 30th December 2009

The Punjab government has decided to organise a state-level function in the second week of February 2010 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Baba Moti Ram Mehra.

A relatively less known servant in the kitchen of the Sirhind Faujdar, Baba Mehra sacrificed his whole family to serve milk to the Sahibzadas and Mata Gujri during their imprisonment, Information Minister Sewa Singh Sekhwan said here on Tuesday.

He added the entire humanity was indebted to Baba Mehra, his wife Bibi Bholiji and his mother, who, despite Wazir Khan's warning, dared to sneak into the prison chamber to serve fresh water and milk to the hungry Sahibzadas and Mata Gujri for three nights.

After the martyrdom of the Sahibzadas, the entire family of Baba Mehra, including his mother, wife and a seven-yearold son, was done to death in a "kohlu" (oil press).
